Account Frozen for KYC? How to Unfreeze It (RBI Rules)
General information, not legal advice. No outcome is promised, and the position can change, so verify anything below before you rely on it.
If your account was restricted for incomplete KYC, your situation is considerably simpler than a cyber or police freeze: there is no investigating agency to satisfy and no case to resolve. The bank is the only decision-maker.

Banks are required to keep customer records updated under the RBI Master Direction on KYC. If update notices went unanswered, the bank can restrict the account. This is not a freeze under the CrPC or BNSS, there is no FIR, no cyber cell, and no NCRP grievance involved, and citing any of that machinery in your letters will only confuse matters.
Step 1: Assemble the documents
- PAN card, self-attested
- Aadhaar or passport as photo identification
- Address proof: utility bill, bank statement, or Aadhaar
- Signature verification or declaration in the bank's format
- Anything specific to the account type, such as business registration for a current account
Step 2: Submit in writing and get it acknowledged
Submit at your home branch in duplicate and ask them to stamp and date your copy. Follow up in writing citing the RBI Master Direction on KYC and the Master Circular on Customer Service in Banks (RBI/2015-16/59), and ask for written confirmation of the date on which the account will be restored.
Step 3: Escalate if the bank sits on it
If the account is not restored within a reasonable time after you have completed KYC, email the bank's Principal Nodal Officer, copied to the Managing Director and CEO. If that does not work, a complaint to the RBI Ombudsman under the RBI Ombudsman Scheme, 2021 at cms.rbi.org.in is well suited to this: an unexplained delay after compliance is a straightforward deficiency in service.
Make sure it is only a KYC issue
Occasionally a KYC restriction sits on top of something else: a hold placed at an agency's request, or the bank's own transaction-monitoring flag. Ask the bank to confirm in writing whether any other restriction is active on the account. Completing KYC will not clear a hold that was placed for a different reason, and it is better to find that out at the start than after three weeks of waiting.
Frequently asked questions
Can a bank restrict my account for KYC without warning?
Banks are expected to send reminders before restricting an account. If yours was restricted without notice, raise it in writing citing the RBI Master Direction on KYC, and escalate to the Principal Nodal Officer and then the RBI Ombudsman if the response is unsatisfactory.
How long does it take to restore a KYC-restricted account?
Usually a few days after complete documents are submitted at the branch. Get an acknowledgement when you submit, so any delay after that is easy to demonstrate.
Is a KYC restriction a criminal freeze?
No. It is an administrative restriction under RBI KYC rules. It does not involve the police, the courts, or any provision of the CrPC or BNSS.
Will my account be closed if I do not complete KYC?
After reminders and a notice period, a bank can restrict transactions and ultimately close the account under the KYC Master Direction. Completing the documentation promptly is the way to avoid that.
